Thanks to a Google+ friend for commenting the name of these flowers. I actually had thought they were Impatiens. I posted a pic with them in it and a butterfly and glad he left a comment of the name. Mother planted these years ago and they continue to come back every year. Impatiens were also planted at the same time so for whatever reason we thought both of them were the same. Nice to know what they are now. :) Vinca or Periwinkles are able to endure the hot Alabama summers not to mention the bugs that do damage to some other flowers we've planted in our yard. They don't take bites out of the glossy leaves and we don't put poison on them to keep them away. The Vinca (Catharanthus roseus) are native to Madagascar and is common to many subtropical regions world wide. I have been surprised to read of their medicinal uses. Their present use and how many countries have known of their medicinal properties long before modern medicine and pharmaceutical companies did. Don't eat them though they can be toxic! This isn't one of those do it yourself remedies either it can be poisonous! It contains many alkaloids and has been used in treating some types of cancers, tumors, diabetes and malaria. From what I read the use of it is generating hundreds of millions of dollars for the pharmaceutical industry ! It amazes me man has been on earth this long and it's taken this many years just to begin to understand the plants He placed here ! My purpose of these blogs has been to learn even if just a small amount of knowledge about His creation. Specifically the plants, trees and flowers God placed here and to share with others this information. I do also love to share the pictures that I take of each topic I write about.
